NSV Highlight on: TeachSafeSchools.org

by Sean Hedden

TeachSafeSchools.org is a valuable resource for school administrators, teachers, counselors, and staff who are looking to keep their students safe. The website is run by The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment and intends to “provide research-based school violence prevention procedures for educators.”

School staff can find ways to improve school safety  with helpful handouts like the School Safety Checklist, Seven Steps to a Safer School, and Indicators of Troubled Schools & Classrooms. Moreover, TeachSafeSchools.org instructs educators on how to create a more nurturing environment while fostering effective instructional activities–both are research-based violence prevention strategies. Administrators can learn how to develop better educational leadership skills while counselors can understand the psychological issues that impact learning and safety. Also, the site gives tips on how to implement effective interventions and explains the risk of zero-tolerance policies. In the end, TeachSafeSchools.org offers links and downloads, providing even more information that can help youth be safe in school.
