NSV Highlight on: Active Minds

by Sean Hedden

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for college students, taking nearly 1,100 lives a year. Active Minds has been a leading organization supporting young adults with mental illness. By creating chapters across colleges and universities in North America, young people can find support and resources that will help save lives.

Active Minds comes together with its student-run chapters, providing “programming that educates their peers about mental health, connects students to resources, and aims to change negative perceptions about mental health disorders.”   Campus-wide activities, like Send Silence Packing and PostSecretU, help bring acceptance and awareness to the community–creating advocacy for those with mental illness. Check out how to start a chapter at your school, support those with mental illnesses, and keep young people safe.
